3 Ways to Boost Your Chance at Admission
Tips from the Mount Royal University Admissions team on securing a seat in your chosen program.
Applying to university can feel daunting. There's a lot of pressure and a big next step ahead. You may have your heart set on a program and a university. What if it doesn't work out?
Here's what you should know: university admissions teams want you to succeed.
We – the Mount Royal University Admissions and Recruitment team – are the people (yes, we are real humans) on the receiving end of your application. And today, we're excited to bring you our top tips for increasing your chance at admission.
Apply early
The number one way to boost your chance at admission is to apply early.
At MRU and most other universities, the most sought-after programs will all fill with early admission applicants. Here, applications to our Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Midwifery, Bachelor of Interior Design and Bachelor of Education – Elementary all firmly close on Feb. 1: the early admissions deadline. Other programs may fill with qualified early applicants too.
Make sure you're aware if your desired program is highly competitive or has a firm early application deadline, but applying early is always your safest bet for securing available spots.
Other benefits to applying early:
- Getting your application out of the way means you can focus on your Grade 12 coursework.
- More space and time to enjoy all your Grade 12 happenings like grad events, sporting events and social events with friends.
Apply to more than one program (and choose a realistic backup plan)
At Mount Royal University, you can apply to two programs at no additional cost (that's not true for all schools). It's a good idea because if you don't get into your first program of choice, you may very well get your second choice.
Universities list the competitive GPA range for each of their programs in their Viewbooks and their website (you can find MRU's here). Don't be deterred by high competitive averages! Always apply for your first choice. Every year the average is reset by the applicant pool. With that said, you might want to consider a program with a lower competitive average as your backup.
You can also consider alternative entrance options like MRU's University Entrance Option or Open Studies and work towards being better qualified for your first program of choice.
There are opportunities to transfer once you are a student at MRU.
Show us your full potential
Unlike many other universities, MRU doesn't base our decisions solely on your Grade 11 grades – we also factor in the grades you expect to achieve in Grade 12. That gives you every opportunity to showcase your full potential. When you self-report your Grade 12 grades, be both confident and realistic. Then keep working hard and finish strong.
We wish you luck with your application. If you have questions about the admissions process here at MRU, you can join an info session, schedule a 1:1 support call or schedule a callback with our Admissions team. Don't hesitate to reach out – talking to people is a great way to get a better sense of a university and make the process feel less intimidating.
